If you open the Earn tab in Trust Wallet, you might assume you can pull your money out whenever you want. You cannot. Most people who try Trust Wallet staking assume they can withdraw at a moment's notice, and this lock-up trap is the single biggest gotcha for newcomers. When you commit crypto to earn rewards, you are locking it away for a set period. If the market drops, you cannot sell or move your tokens until that waiting period clears. Now that we have named the pitfall, here is exactly how staking works and how to do it right.

What Is Staking and Why Do It?

Staking is the process of locking tokens to help secure a proof-of-stake blockchain, earning rewards in return. Unlike Bitcoin mining, which requires expensive hardware, proof-of-stake lets you participate by pledging crypto you already hold. The network pays you for your contribution.

Staking through a personal wallet is non-custodial, meaning your private keys stay with you, unlike staking through a centralized exchange where the platform holds your funds. Trust Wallet supports over 25 tokens with returns ranging from under 1% to over 15% annually depending on the asset.

What You Need Before You Start Staking

Make sure you have the following before you begin:

  • Trust Wallet set up on your iOS or Android device
  • Your seed phrase backed up on paper and stored offline
  • The token you want to stake already in your wallet
  • A small amount of the same native token for network fees (without this, the transaction will fail)

How to Stake Crypto in Trust Wallet

  1. Open Trust Wallet and tap the Earn tab.
  2. Select Native Staking.
  3. Select the token you want to stake.
  4. Tap Stake and enter the amount.
  5. Choose a validator or keep the default. Trust Wallet pre-selects a reputable validator; the default is fine for most users. The main risk is slashing (losing a portion of staked tokens if a validator misbehaves), but this is extremely rare with the defaults Trust Wallet provides.
  6. Review the details, including the lock-up period shown on screen.
  7. Tap Confirm to submit the transaction.
  8. Track your rewards in the Earn Portfolio.

Which Tokens Can You Stake (And How Much Can You Earn?)

The APR (Annual Percentage Rate) fluctuates based on network activity. Always check the current live rates in the Earn tab; the figures below are approximate starting points only. No minimum staking amount is required for most tokens.

TokenEstimated APREstimated Wait to Unstake
ETH (Ethereum)~2.7%~4 days
SOL (Solana)~5.9%~2-3 days
BNB~0.7%Varies
ATOM (Cosmos)~15%Varies
DOT (Polkadot)~15%Varies
TRX (Tron)~4.4%Varies
ADA (Cardano)~4.7%None

ADA is the standout exception: Cardano has no lock-up period, so you can move or sell your ADA at any time.

The Part That Catches Beginners Off Guard: Unstaking Takes Time

Almost every major network enforces a lock-up period (a set window where your tokens are frozen and cannot be moved). Most networks require 2 to 4 days after you request to stop staking before your tokens are accessible.

Unstaking is a two-step process. First, submit an Unstake transaction. This stops your rewards and starts the countdown. Second, once the lock-up expires, return and submit a separate Claim transaction to receive your tokens. Both steps cost network fees.

The key consequence: if the price drops during the lock-up window, you cannot sell until it clears. Only stake tokens you do not need to access quickly. ADA is the exception.

How to Unstake in Trust Wallet

  1. Open Trust Wallet and tap Earn.
  2. Tap Earn Portfolio.
  3. Select the staked asset you want to reclaim.
  4. Tap Unstake, enter the amount, tap Continue, then Confirm.
  5. Wait for the lock-up period to expire.
  6. Return and tap Claim to receive your tokens.

Conclusion

Staking is a straightforward way to put existing crypto holdings to work. Respect the lock-up periods, keep a small buffer for network fees, and check current rates in the app before committing. If you want to explore what else your wallet can do, compare wallets or browse our wallet reviews.
